7digital What we said: Despite critical consensus that Ivy Tripp was a high-water mark for Waxahatchee artistically, Katie Crutchfield found herself unable to bask in the glory at the time, being forced to deal with the fallout of a long-term relationship instead. This follow-up finds the Philadelphia-based singer-songwriter reflecting on that painful period, laying bare both the personal sacrifices made and her subsequent journey of self-discovery, on a break-up record that never once wallows in self pity. That sense of liberation is palpable in Crutchfield’s arrangements too, which extend from soaring, Breeders-esque college-rock ("Silver", "Hear You") to the hushed acoustics and folk-y lilt of closing-track "Fade".
