7digital What we said: It’s easy to dismiss musical legends raiding the vaults for previously-unreleased material as a cynical move, largely because often it is an excuse to palm off sub-par work on loyal followers. Hitchhiker, however, is an exception. Yes, fans might well have encountered eight of the 10 songs before – in different forms on subsequent studio albums or during live performances – but it’s still a thrill to hear the likes of “Pocahontas” and “Powderfinger” solo and acoustic. Recorded in Malibu’s Indigo Studio in 1976 with After The Goldrush-producer David Briggs, this lost collection offers a fascinating snapshot of Neil Young at his creative peak, two years after On The Beach and three prior to Crazy Horse-collaboration Rust Never Sleeps.
