7digital What we said: Considering the fact that Anthony Gonzalez’s last LP was the sort of double-disc sprawl which, by definition, demands quite a bit of patience from listeners, it’s interesting that this follow-up is focused on the ephemeral – and ultimately disposable – nature of music in the 21st century. If that sounds pretty sombre subject matter, fear not: the concept simply gives Gonzalez justification for treating the idea of “guilty pleasures” with as little respect as it deserves. Plundering the more MOR musical tropes of the 70s and 80s, Junk is a winningly-nostalgic celebration of synth-pop, soft-rock and breezy funk, and is impressively jam-packed with potential singles. Add to that guest appearances by Beck, Susanne Sundfør and guitar legend Steve Vai, and you’re left – somewhat ironically – with a record that deserves to be remembered for years to come.
