7digital What we said: For the follow-up to 2014’s Grammy-winning Morning Phase, Beck has done what he does best: switched styles entirely. Instead of Americana and Beatles-referencing folk, this time the Californian instrumentalist is delivering bright pop melodies with innovative production, suggesting that his stints writing with Sia and Lady Gaga have left their mark. Naturally, there’s real variety within Colors’ spectrum, which hops between the sunny guitar-pop of “Dreams”, the trap-inspired bounce of “Wow” and the piano-led “Dear Life”, which is redolent of Figure 8-era Elliott Smith. The result is a record that's as vivid as its title, and that provides the perfect antidote to the doom and gloom of global politics right now.
