Dr. Hook

Mellow country-rock outfit Dr. Hook & the Medicine show are best known in the U.K. for a series of soft rock 1970's readio staples--"Sylvia's Mother", "Sexy Eyes" and many more--in the U.S. their signature was the 1972 novelty hit, "The Cover of the 'Rolling Stone'," though they were also a respectable chart presence throughout the 1970s. The New Jersey-via-Dixie band had a raucous biker-gang image that belied a surprisingly smooth, laid-back style, one that presaged the lite-rock and adult alternative sounds. The band managed to tough it out in the '80s, and maintained a solid career on the nostalgia circuit for years to come. And for those curious, in March of 1973, the band did land on the cover of Rolling Stone.
